Are you kidding me? I have just found an article that would've been helpful a few months ago!
Keith Ferrell has compiled 48 Ultra-Cool Summer Sites for Kids and Teachers for Edutopia. There are some great sites on here that my computer classes would enjoy when there is a substitute or if they finish a project early. I have scoured the internet multiple times in search for such sites. They are not time consuming, but if a student has an extra 10 minutes they could play around, no make that "explore" these sites. I have one disclaimer: I have sent students to Cool Math Games before and it seems like students choose the mindless games that aren't very educational.
I created a unique styling of my name at Spell With Flickr. And then I spent the past hour trying to figure out how to add HTML codes to this blog. I hope you get a chance to check out some of the "ultra-cool" sites and if you know how to add HTML codes to your blog posts, please share with me. For now, I saved and uploaded each picture, which surprisingly didn't take much time at all.
I know what you mean about the less than educational game selection. I subbed for a teacher once who let her kids use that site if they got their work done...yeah they blew through the work and jumped on Cool Math games and choose the less than stellar choices. :( Learning moment for us both. I like the letter collage! Very nice!
ReplyDeleteI read through this article, too. I love Cool Math (and not just for the games...), but you do have to sort of lead students to the more "beneficial" games. There are so many great sites here, so I will definitely be saving this page for future reference.
ReplyDeleteI also found this article interesting as it was written by the technology coach from the Singapore American School. While I don't know the guy personally, I have been to SAS, and it is a beautiful, well-resourced school.
I read the article but haven't had a chance to actually explore it. I think that when the students are given the chance to go online and play games they want to do just that. There have to be some guidelines on the games they can play and what they can learn from it. I know I have had issues with this before.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well. I bookmarked this page for my 6 year old daughter and am just waiting for "I'm bored, what can I do?". I was pretty impressed with listed utilities he listed. Good stuff!
ReplyDeleteThis Spell With Flickr site is awesome. I can't wait to have my kids practice their spelling words using this. So cool.
